Gauff defends natural hair on TikTok after Miu Miu ad backlash
American tennis star Coco Gauff ended a month-long social media hiatus with an eight-minute TikTok video this week, responding to criticism of her natural hair in a new Miu Miu advertisement. In the video, she detailed the photoshoot process, explaining she avoided slicking back her hair because it damages her 4C curls. Gauff refused to apologize for her appearance, emphasizing representation for others with similar hair.
Gauff addressed thousands of negative comments on her looks, stating her hair was suitable for a high-fashion brand like Miu Miu. She opted for minimal makeup to match the brand's aesthetic and connect with fans. She encouraged young Black girls with kinky hair to style it as they wish, while supporting those who prefer weaves, wigs or full makeup, declaring all choices beautiful.
The 2023 U.S. Open champion has faced body image struggles as a young Black woman. She admitted the backlash initially affected her but affirmed she feels stronger now. Gauff urged viewers feeling insecure about their appearance to embrace themselves.
Gauff will defend her French Open title starting May 19.
