Katherine Legge's attempt to complete the Memorial Day Double ended on the 19th lap of the Indianapolis 500 when contact with Ryan Hunter-Reay's spinning car brought out the first caution. The 45-year-old driver exited her No. 11 Chevrolet without assistance and was later evaluated and released from the medical center.

Legge started the race from 26th position after qualifying the previous weekend. She was competing for HMD Motorsports in an alliance with A.J. Foyt Racing. The incident occurred after Hunter-Reay lost control in Turn 2.

Legge told FOX Sports that Hunter-Reay spun in front of her while she was conserving fuel. She attempted to avoid the car by moving low on the track but made contact after the spinning machine slid back up the racing surface. Smoke from the incident limited visibility.

With her Indy 500 run concluded, Legge planned to travel to Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Coca-Cola 600 scheduled to start at 6 p.m. ET. She stated she would need to adjust her mindset before the NASCAR event.
