Orlando Magic fire coach Jamahl Mosley after playoff collapse
The Orlando Magic fired head coach Jamahl Mosley on Monday after blowing a 3-1 series lead to the Detroit Pistons in the first round of the NBA playoffs. The collapse eliminated Orlando from postseason play. Magic president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman announced the move.
Mosley had taken over before the 2021-22 season following 14 years as an assistant with the Denver Nuggets, Cleveland Cavaliers and Dallas Mavericks. He compiled a 189-221 record with Orlando across four full seasons, guiding the team to three playoff appearances without advancing past the first round. In 2024, he finished second in NBA Coach of the Year voting after the Magic improved to 47-35 from 34 wins the prior season.
Orlando entered the series positioned to upset the top-seeded Pistons, winning three of the first four games. The Magic saw a 24-point home lead evaporate in one contest and missed 23 straight shots in Game 6 on May 1, 2026. Mosley ranks as the third-winningest coach in franchise history, behind Brian Hill (267 wins) and Stan Van Gundy (259).
The organization built its core around Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, Jalen Suggs and Desmond Bane, all under contract long-term. Weltman cited the need for a new voice, while Mosley reflected on the journey with his players. Orlando now seeks a successor to elevate the group.
